Abstract

Thailand has established the National Information Policy in 1986, and along with the Policy the ThaiNATIS was set up to enable the policy to operate effectively. The ThaiNATIS was represented by National Coordinating Centers from 6 subject areas and directed by the National Committee for Direction and Coordination which has been responsible by the National Library of Thailand. A great deal of library development took place as seen obviously from the progress of university libraries today. The picture however shows certain spots which are not well improved especially in school libraries and public libraries in the country provinces. The current status of the National Information Policy illustrates relatively more the negative side than the positive side. Comments from participating members of the ThaiNATIS showed that problems came from management process from the National Committee for Direction and Coordination during the past 20 years. Library and information service has much to perform to fulfill the goal of information for all. The Government however agreed on January 9, 2007 that National Committee for Direction and Coordination continue to function. This decision sheds the light for the National Information Policy and the ThaiNATIS to rethink the role and work out new strategic plan according to the 10th National Economic and Social Development Plan that declared the Country to be a knowledge-based society. The final section of this study attempted to perform a SWOT analysis which was expected to obtain suggestions and recommendations which would be proposed to the Government through the channel of National Committee for Direction and Coordination.
